10 Year Anniversary Fundraising ELLE Magazine Event
Posted by Ricky Mason
on March 18, 2013

It gives us great pleasure to recap our fundraising event and 10 year anniversary party to share with our readers.
On March 13th we hosted a party with 3 thoughts in mind.
1.We partnered with Elle Magazine and P&G to drive new clients into the area. This was an annual Elle event hosted in a different venue each year. It's a tremendous honor to be part of an event such as this. Elle Magazine sent out hundreds of Evites to their local subscribers in an effort to share in a red carpet meet and greet at the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa at 15-17 South Moger Avenue in Mt. Kisco. We offered consultations, tours of the grand establishment, refreshments and music, as we introduced our business to new clients and new services to our current clients. There were 150 plus in attendance and the evening was a true success.
2. We celebrated the milestone achievement of our 10 year anniversary in the town of Mt. Kisco. Our staff, friends and clients danced the night away in our 7000 sq. ft salon.
3. We felt that dedicating the night to a charitable cause would make it more rewarding.
I had the pleasure and privilege of attending the Hairdressers Helping Hairdressers (HHH) benefit for fellow beauty professionals impacted by Hurricane Sandy, on December 9 at Canoe Studios in New York City. My partner Joseph Norris, salon staff and I have been so greatly moved by the show of unified support at the event and decided to involve our salon and our Mount Kisco community in doing something that will assist the efforts to help hairdressers that have lost their homes and businesses.
There are many hairdressers that have lost everything and every dime we can raise towards helping out and giving them a new start.
The Disaster Relief Fund is particularly dear to us at Richard Scott as we are no strangers to the devastating effects of disaster. In 2007, our business was very nearly wiped out of existence after an unfortunate fire but thankfully we have been able to rebuild it. Since that difficult time in our history we have moved from strength to strength and are an important fixture in the village of Mount Kisco, NY.
We are hoping to be able to help others achieve the same progressive recovery and not only provide financial assistance through fund-raising but moral support and reassurance. For those affected by devastation the horizon can appear dark and the future bleak. It can be helpful to hear from those that have gone through the same despair that survival is more than possible. Richard Scott is thriving now and so can others.
We were happy to announce that we raised $4000.00 in donations and our site to continue accepting donations on line will be open for the next year.

Pamper Your Way to Perfect Peace
Posted by Liz Slaughter
on March 8, 2013

Whether you realize it or not, it’s pretty easy to get into the routine of putting yourself last. This is especially true when you’re juggling careers, spouses, kids and recreational commitments. Sometimes you may often wonder what “me” time is anymore, and that is precisely when it’s time to stop this emotionally unhealthy cycle from continuing any further. In this installment of Inside Out, we’ll explore ways to pamper yourself and appreciate who you are and all of the good things you do on a daily basis. Often when you think of giving to ourselves, a large purchase for something we’ve wanted for a long time comes to mind, and while that is one method that’s great to feel good, it should only be used very rarely to avoid unhealthy addictive patterns and waste. There are many ways to reward ourselves that we could all find benefit in making a habit of implementing so that we can each remain as much of a priority in our own lives as everything else.
Material Pampering
Most people love a good shopping spree and are open to the idea at just about any time, but while loading up on the latest styles from the clearance racks of your favorite stores is fun, there is also a bigger picture. Buying yourself something (or a few things) is nice as a reward for a trying work week, losing a few pounds, maintaining all your commitments or even wanting to look good for your loved one. It’s a fun way to ensure that you’re always on your “To-Do” list. Since this is financial pampering it should be done in moderation, every month or six weeks you should splurge a little on yourself…and no one else.
Physical Pampering
Sometimes all it takes for you to put yourself as a priority over everything else is lying back and relaxing, completely zoning out everything around you, even just for a moment. That’s what physical pampering is, and it comes in many forms. Soaking in a luxuriating bubble bath for an hour with candles and soft music, going to a spa for a massage or beauty treatment, indulging in your favorite decadent food, getting your hair or makeup done (complete with a new style or color) or hitting up the salon for a mani/pedi are just a few ways to physically pamper yourself. The best thing about physical pampering is that you feel gratified by the experience and see the results instantly!
Environmental Pampering
Although it sounds simple, something as easy as changing your surroundings, even for a couple of hours, can make a world of difference. Pampering yourself by your choice of surroundings is a lovely and visually stimulating method. Sitting in the park soaking up a little nature, checking out the latest art exhibits at your local museum or even catching up on all those movies you haven’t seen are little ways to change your atmosphere from the office to home, and back again. In addition, going out for a walk in your neighborhood in the evenings is a way to not only change your atmosphere, but stay healthy as well.
Take out your calendar and add “me time” to at least an hour of time one day per week. Be strict with yourself about following through. Remember the key to feeling beautiful starts with you and how you feel inside!

Winter hair nightmare!
Posted by Nathalia Valesquez
on February 14, 2013

From bad hair day to bad hair season
Experts say “harsh winter weather and the drastic change of temperature, can be hair’s number 1 enemy”
So please put down the scissors and let me walk you through some steps and hair advice to prevent that unwanted “winter hair”.
Shampoo and Conditioner play a very important role during winter season:
-Opt for creamy shampoo that may contain the following ingredients:
Lanolin, protein, silicone or shea butter.
(Any of the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa employees will be more than happy to help you
choose the right shampoo and conditioner)
-Try to use lukewarm water instead of hot water.
-Indulge your hair as often as every two weeks to a Conditioning treatment or even a glaze service to add shine and conditioning to your hair during this season.
-Make sure to have a silk pillowcases during this season as well.
So instead of going from hat hair to static electricity or even split ends to dry frizz, do your hair a favor and follow some of these steps to avoid the “hairy look” for this season.
Inside Out Beauty ~ February 2013 Edition
Posted by Liz Slaughter
on February 1, 2013

Most of us have already broken our New Year’s resolutions by now. For many of us, those abandoned commitments had a lot to do with how we would improve our appearance in one way or another. It’s totally natural to feel down about your appearance every now and then, but that doesn’t mean that it should become a habit either. Whether you’ve fallen out of love with your hair, makeup or are struggling with your weight, the larger issue about not feeling your best comes from inside. Making subtle adjustments to the inner you, can make the outer you look so much better! February’s Inside Out Beauty installment is about incorporating daily affirmations into your life that highlight your inner and outer beauty. Positivity radiates even more than an expert bronzer application, so let your light shine through!
Spoken Affirmations
When you wake up in the morning and look in the mirror, get into the habit of saying positive things about yourself that make you the person you are and how those things benefit you and those around you. This helps you feel beautiful because the way we feel about ourselves is the essential and most important step to being truly beautiful, both inside and out. Don’t just say your spoken affirmations once a day, say them as often as you like, preferably while looking into the mirror, so that you are looking at the person behind the words. Remember, speaking positivity makes it easier for positive things to come your way.
Visual Affirmations
Some women like to have a vision board of great things that they have achieved or future goals that they hope to attain. This gives you both, things to be proud of and things to aspire to. There is also something called the “sticky note method” where you place sticky note(s) on your mirror with all of the positive things about yourself, your life and your goals. Many times when we write things down it helps us to remember them and actually absorb them so they become a part of our mindset. If the mirror isn’t your thing, you could also place the notes at your desk, on the dashboard of your car or on top of your daily planner. Additionally, each time you achieve one of your goals, replace it with another to continue growth. Don’t forget to reward yourself for tiny victories along the way.
Physical Affirmations
Doing things to make yourself feel and look better is also an essential part of embracing your inner beauty that ultimately radiates on the outside. It could be something as simple as soaking in a luxuriating bubble bath at the end of the day, shopping for a new outfit or shoes to reward yourself for losing a few pounds, trying out a new hairstyle/makeup look, going for a walk/run or any exercise to maintain your health or de-stress after a long day at work or preparing or treating yourself to a meal. These things make you feel better and look better, but they work doubly well when combined with the spoken and visual affirmations.
Remember the key to feeling beautiful starts with you and how you feel inside!
~ Happy February!
Let's get Victor's Viewpoint on Hair Color and Style
Posted by Victor Tripaldi
on January 30, 2013

Hello my name is Victor T. For the past ten years I have had the pleasure of working at the Richard Scott Salon & Day Spa. Being a part of this upscale salon has proved to be wonderful, exciting and educationally satisfying for me. As a multi-faceted hair expert, one of my specialties is formulating hair color. It’s a challenging task to the say the least, however, as an educated hair colorist, I can achieve any desired result that is obtainable in theory.
As we all know, every strand of hair possesses its own unique porosity and texture. These characteristics determine how the hair will absorb and reflect color. An experienced hair colorist eliminates the guesswork when taking these factors into consideration.
H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) is a natural oxidant. When moisture in the atmosphere comes into contact with the oxygen embedded in the hair, a natural lightening occurs. We call this oxidation and we see it every day as the hair color dissipates. We often use glazes to refresh color safely and effectively. As a P&G exclusive salon, we recommend Color Touch by Wella (non ammonia color) to refresh hair that has faded due to oxidation.
During winter month’s warm and dark tones tend to oxidize less due to a reduced amount of exposure to the sun. I must say that during the winter months brunettes and red stay stronger and more vibrant than they do in the summer. I recently had the pleasure of returning the color on a blonde client back to a rich brunette. This client of mine was a beautiful young lady with beautiful porcelain skin and piercing blue eyes. She wanted to try something new and exciting with her natural blonde hair. After my professional consult, we decided to make her color a deep red with a hint of brown for depth resulting in haircolor with exceptional shine that was simply incredible. It was a refreshing seasonal change and she could not of have been happier…
As an expert hair colorist, I am most proficient in blondes; both creating new shades and highlighting with contrast. As I have many years of experience with the foil technique, I am also presently using my painting techniques on many clients requesting the very current and popular Ombre’ trend.
Although my specialty is color, I am a highly trained and professional hair-cutting technician. I enjoy working on long hair and strive to keep my clients style looking fresh and new with out sacrificing length. Be it long and flowing or short and sassy, I find haircutting to be exciting and enjoyable while keeping my clients happy. I earned the confidence of my clients therefore they allow me artistic freedom to cut and color their hair to my discretion however; I always consult first so we are clear on the desired finished look.
The most favorable finishing touch of coarse is when I escort my client to Michele, our gifted make-up specialist to complete their look. She compliments any style with her beautiful make-up artistry.
Nothing compares to the fun and satisfaction I get in making my clients beautiful at the legendary Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa.

PulsedBeauty
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL): Information, Treatment, Benefits
Unfortunately, no one can prevent aging. We all get older; but you can prevent the effects aging has on your skin. Intense pulsed light is an advanced light therapy treatment; developed to dramatically reduce the effects of aging by erasing sunspots, fine lines and broken capillaries. Intense pulsed light is also an approved method for hair removal, and works much faster than most other laser hair removal treatments.
What is it?
Intense pulsed light, also known as IPL, is the use of high intensity light rays in short intervals of time. The rays of light are often administered in pulses, or wave like patterns, which is how the treatment earned its name. Most any candidate can receive Intense Pulsed Light treatment, and the technology has proved highly effective for those individuals with thick, dark hair or heavy discoloration on their skin. The treatment can be administered on almost any part of the body, however it is best to avoid the extremely sensitive areas of your skin, such as directly around the eyes, lips, nose and ears.
How does it work?
The intense pulsed light rays are delivered through a hand held device, or a stationary robotic arm that is controlled by a computer. The wand or arm is positioned over the area receiving the treatment and the light rays are administered in brief, repetitive spurts. The intensity of the light allows it to penetrate deep into your skin, reaching the root of your hair follicle. The root, or bulb, of each individual hair is the most effective area to target for long lasting hair removal, and is also where the majority of melanin, or skin pigmentation is concentrated. The light is then transformed into heat by the cells in your skin and essentially vaporizes unwanted hair and melanin buildup. By targeting this specific area, unwanted pigmentation and skin discolorations can be reversed and at the same time the hair is removed from the follicle, leaving behind smooth, even toned skin.
Benefits
Unlike topical hair removal treatments, which only temporarily remove hair until it grows back, intense pulsed light therapy actually reduces the number of hairs that will grow back. Studies have shown that up to 85% – 90% of hair can be permanently removed after a few rounds of treatment. Oftentimes more than one round of treatment is required, but patients have seen the desired effects in as little as 2 treatments. Most patients elect to receive anywhere between 2 and 8 treatments. These treatments can be given 4 to 6 weeks apart, allowing time for the remaining hair to begin growing back. Intense pulsed light therapy is great for those individuals with a hectic schedule. The actual treatment itself takes anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and the recovery time needed is almost none, with very little visible side effects present after the treatment. The skin will be a little tender after each treatment so it is best to provide additional protection by applying a heavy moisturizer and sun block immediately afterwards.

Hairstyles and color for 2013
Posted by Ricky Mason
on December 5, 2012

This coming year we will mix and match everything at the Richard Scott Salon and Day Spa. Be it hair or fashion, your style is based upon self-expression. Leave any opinion of matching colors and prints behind. Our inspiration for this season comes from the 90’s! Ready for overlay haircuts and platform shoes? They are both coming back big time! We are seeing clashing colors, bold prints and varying textures playing off each other to make a fashion statement. Just look at some of our stylists to see what I mean.
Defined structure with a touch of playfulness comes to mind as we are showing bold strong lines and combining softness to the looks. Razors and shears are used to create added texture more and more this year. Do you have curly hair but feel that you have to straiten it? I advise my clients to, “Embrace their curls”. Don’t forget that the right product can make the difference between great curls and bad frizz. Try smoothening your curls with Wella Enrich Straitening Cream or Potion 9 by Sebastian then seal it in with Sebastian Texturizer Gel. Do you have straight hair and always fight with your round brush for volume? Try Wella Ultra Body Mousse for some fullness or opt for a sleek, head hugging cut to frame your face and bring out your best features. Gel Forte’ by Sebastian can tame the waves and give you that sleek smooth finish. Always accompany a short hair look with the right make-up. Full sexy lips and long lashes are my favorite. Stop by the Denina Make-up Suite, soon to be located in the front of our salon, to purchase cosmetics or learn how to apply your make-up like a pro.
Recent advances in Wella hair color with a Triluxiv technology make for an endless pallet that our colorists can choose from. These High Density Color Molecules deliver a superior color unlike that of the past. Dipping seems to be the craze. Just the ends dipped in bleach and toned with vibrant colors, giving a touch of bold color on the ends. This season we are also seeing pinks and corals to enhance blondes and redheads. On brunettes we are adding deep reflective metallic and stone like hues like that of a rain-slicked street at night. We are also showing strong blues and greens on dark brown and black hair. It’s quite striking and very fashionable. We utilize Color Touch demi-color along with Pastel developer by Wella to create these sheer soft tones. Don’t forget to always use a color safe shampoo to extend the life of your hair color.
Our inspirations for new trends come from our everyday surroundings. And what a better place to be inspired than New York? We live in an area full of color and versatility. Inspiration for can be found all around us. Check out the streets, the trees, colorful houses and the sky above then get creative! In an area that is so energetic how can you not be inspired to express your style?
